In fact, National Public Radio (NPR) recently ran a segment titled, “Making Art is Good for Your Health.” The NPR correspondent quotes a leading researcher in art therapy and professor at Drexel University who states that creating art “can reduce stress and anxiety,” “improve your mood,” and provide “a strong sense of agency, the ability to solve problems by imagining possible solutions.”

Six ways to jump-start your creativity

The NPR article also offers six tips on how to get motivated to create art, including:

Remember, you don’t need to be an artist with a capital “A”

Pick the medium that you enjoy – drawing, painting, collage, etc.

Focus just on the process, without any expectations of outcomes

Schedule time for making art, as you do for work, exercise, and social activities

Enjoy the “meditative flow” of creating

Don't worry when you’re stumped, just relax and refocus, or take a quick break and come back to it with fresh eyes
